Themes

SESSION A  July 7-11: Science and Art Institute

Are you a creative thinker? Looking for new ways to explore marine science and express yourself through art?  Join us for a week of exploration, investigation, and expression. Science can sometimes be tough to process, and even more difficult to translate into something that has big-picture meaning and relevance in our everyday lives. Prepare to approach ocean and coastal science investigations in a whole new way! We will spend our mornings diving into topics like ocean acidification, marine mammal rescue, and rocky shore ecology, and will learn by doing: meeting scientists, using new equipment, exploring, collecting data, sketching, and learning how to ask questions, follow intuition and tackle big questions. Afternoons will be all about translating our scientific content into art. Paint, draw, create a 3D model, layer materials for a collage, or perhaps make a video, a podcast, or just a compilation of sound bites--you decide. An artist will work with us to brainstorm and develop creative ways to translate our content, so that the art we produce will tell a story about the science that inspired it.
