with NOAA Explorer Charles Mazel

Thursday, October 9, 2014
5:30pm: dinner
6:30pm: children's activities and presentation for adults

As Halloween approaches we take note of the changing foliage, but what about the colored spectacles of the deep sea? Get ready for a night full of wonder and learning for the whole family during the Glow in the Dark Dinner on Thursday, October 9!

The evening kicks off with a family-style pasta dinner. Then, children will join Center naturalists to learn about bioluminescent creatures of the deep sea and engage in fun learning activities. Kids can dare to swim through the Hall of Bioluminescences, make a glowing sea creature of their imagination, and play Florescent Flashlight Tag, earning treats along the way.

While the kids are engaged, adults will join will join NOAA Ocean Explorer Dr. Charles Mazel for an image-rich recount of his pioneering explorations in underwater fluorescence. You'll learn about the phenomenon of fluorescence and the find out why the phenomenon is still puzzling scientists today. You'll also discover how researchers are putting the fluorescence of marine organisms to valuable use.

Arrive at 5:00 p.m. to explore the Center; dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. The children’s activities and adult’s presentation begin at 6:30 p.m. and everyone will  be on their way by 7:30 p.m., with plenty of “glowing” conversation to share on the ride home. Kids are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes to add to the festivities.

Tickets are $15 for SSC member adults, $8 for member children; $18 non-member adults, $10 non-member children ages 3-12 and are available by clicking the button above. Kindly purchase your tickets by October 6.

About the Speaker

Dr. Charles H. Mazel is a Principal Research Scientist at Physical Sciences Inc., a small, private research and development firm in Andover, Massachusetts. He is also President of NightSea LLC, a small spin-off of PSI that he runs to develop specialized lights and filters so that sport and science divers can see and photograph fluorescence. A good portion of Mazel’s research is involved with fluorescence in the sea—discovering what fluoresces, measuring the fluorescence properties, documenting the fluorescence with photography or video, and developing new equipment to improve the process of observing fluorescence.
